Arrow Arrow Vietnam hands over remains of American soldier in Hanoi

A set of remains of a US serviceman who died during the Vietnam War was handed over to the US at a ceremony held in Hanoi on July 9.

The remains, recovered during the 143rd Joint Field Activities between April and July, had been unilaterally reviewed and concluded by Vietnamese forensic specialists. They will be brought back to Hawaii in the US for further review.

Le Chi Dung, director of Vietnam Office for Seeking Missing Personnel (VNOSMP), thanked the US for helping Vietnam address war aftermath as well as for providing medical supplies and vaccines to combat COVID-19. He reaffirmed the Vietnamese Government’s commitment to working closely with the US side in acts of humanitarian co-operation.

Addressing the repatriation ceremony, Chargé d'Affaires Christopher Klein expressed his deep gratitude and great appreciation for the full and effective co-operation of the Vietnamese Government and people, despite the ongoing complications brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Finding remains of US servicemen who went missing in action during the war in Vietnam is an ongoing humanitarian activity that has been carried out jointly between the Vietnamese and US governments. The latest ceremony marks the 155th hand-over of an American missing servicemen’s remains since 1973.
