Florida’s health department confirmed 5,539 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday and an additional 118 resident deaths as a result of the novel coronavirus.

The state has now verified 1,909,221 COVID-19 cases since the outbreak began and 30,852 resident deaths, according to health department data.

Another 554 non-residents have died in Florida from COVID-19.

Deaths verified in the past day include 16 in Broward County, seven in Miami-Dade County and two in Palm Beach County.

There have been at least 79,344 resident hospitalizations attributed to the virus in the state.

Florida last week reported its first confirmed case of the P.1 COVID-19 variant that was first detected in Brazil, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The state has now verified 500 cases of the B.1.1.7 COVID-19 variant that emerged from the United Kingdom. That’s the highest number for any state in the country.

At least 3,017,661 people have been vaccinated in Florida, with 1,680,230 people in the state getting both shots that are needed. Miami-Dade has had 321,633 people vaccinated, Broward has had 256,151 and Monroe 11,427, according to the latest numbers posted by the state.

The statewide positivity rate for yesterday’s testing was 6.4%.
