Shirley Likes To Have Fun Sometimes

Alberta, Alcohol, Canada, Edmonton, Employees, Jerk, Nightclub | Working | May 8, 2020

I’m tee-total, but I still like to go dancing with my friends. A Shirley Temple is one of my favourite drinks, but for some reason, some bars like to add vodka or rum, without even asking me which one. Because of this, I’ve learned to be specific.

I’m also used to non-alcoholic drinks being free at the clubs we go to.

Me: “Could I please get a Shirley Temple with no alcohol?”

Bartender: “What is that?”

Me: “Just orange juice, Sprite, and grenadine.”

Bartender: “We don’t have grenadine.”

Me: “That’s okay, just orange juice and Sprite.”

She mixes a drink and sets it on the bar.

Bartender: “That’s $5.75.”

Me: “For what?”

Bartender: “For the vodka.”

She says this as if it should be obvious.

Me: “No, I wanted no alcohol. I said just orange juice and Sprite.”

Bartender: *With attitude* “You didn’t say you wanted a virgin.”

I was especially confused because not only was I certain that I had specified no alcohol, but I had actually listed the ingredients for her. A version of this was, unfortunately, a common occurrence at clubs, but this one was definitely the worst one.

I Must Incest You Give Me Your ID

Employees, Minnesota, Restaurant, USA | Working | May 8, 2020

I’m seventeen and I’m at an outdoor restaurant with my parents. My dad — who is 57 — and I go up to the window to order while my mom stays at the table.

Dad: “We’ll have [order] and two beers, please.”

Cashier: “Are both the beers for you, sir?”

Dad: “No, one is for my wife.”

Cashier: *To me* “I’ll need to see your ID, then, ma’am.”

Me: “I’ll go get my mom.”

Get With The Times… Whatever They Are

Bosses & Owners, Lazy/Unhelpful, Michigan, Retail, USA | Working | May 8, 2020

Retail

They’re not posted outside the store, they’re not online — nothing. I call the number listed on their Facebook to try to figure out their hours.

Owner: “Hello?”

Me: “Oh, um, yes, hi. Is this [Antique Store]?”

Owner: “Yes.”

Me: “Okay, I was just curious if you were open today.”

Owner: “No, we’re not open today.”

Me: “Oh, okay. Are you open tomorrow?”

I’m hoping she’ll just tell me their regular business hours.

Owner: “No, we’re not open tomorrow.”

Me: “Okay… Are you open on Tuesday?”

Owner: “Yes.”

Me: “Okay… What times are you open on Tuesday?”

Owner: “[Hours].”

Me: “Okay, thank you!”

It was like pulling teeth. She made it so hard to figure out when she was open. My mom has tried to stop by twice, on late weekday mornings, and she hasn’t been open. I can’t see her staying open long when no one can figure out when they can shop there!

Maybe Should’ve Scrolled Past This One

Bigotry, Bizarre, Canada, home, Strangers, Vancouver | Working | May 8, 2020

I’ve been wanting a scroll saw for a bit and I find one on Facebook Marketplace. I message the seller and, once I confirm it is available, I ask to bring the price down from $190 to $140; I am ready to go to $150, but the seller agrees to my initial offer. We make some basic plans to meet the next day and then he messages me halfway through that next day with his phone number asking me to call.

Seller: “Hello?”

Me: “Hi. It’s [My Name] calling about the scroll saw.”

Five solid seconds pass.

Seller: “I… I thought you were a man.”

Me: “Yeah, I figured.”

He’d called me “buddy” a few times in the messages the day before.

Seller: “It’s… It’s a man’s tool.”

Me: “Okay. Well, I have a band saw now and need a scroll saw for some more delicate work.”

This seems to be good enough for him and we settle on a time and place. As we finalize our plans, he says softly:

Seller: “It’s too much…”

Me: “Sorry? What was that?”

Seller: “What price did we agree on?”

Me: “$140.”

Seller: “It’s too much.”

Me: “I don’t understand.”

Seller: “Maybe 120.”

Me: “What’s 120?”

Seller: “120.”

Me: “Okay…”

For reasons beyond me, when I arrived to pick up the machine, he asked me again how much we agreed on and I said $140. He shook his head and said that it was $120. Weirdest online buy/sell I’ve ever experienced, and I’ve experienced a lot of weirdness buying and selling on these sites.

That’s One Fishy Piece Of Fish

Current Events, Extra Stupid, Great Stuff, Grocery Store, USA | Working | May 8, 2020

I’m at grocery store number five in an attempt to get one week’s worth of groceries during the recent outbreak and subsequent outages. This is the first store I’ve visited in a week with some kind of meat or seafood available.

Because there is no chicken, I get salmon. But it goes like this.

Me: “About how many pounds is this piece of salmon?”

Clerk: “I don’t know.”

I look at her and the scale expectantly. The clerk weighs the piece and it shows just over three pounds.

Me: “I’d like to get that, and would you please cut it into ten pieces?”

Clerk: “Do you want the whole piece?”

Me: “Yes.”

The clerk takes the salmon piece away to a cutting board and cuts it up. She returns with the salmon and a troubled look on her face. I see that the pieces appear to vary widely in weight from two to eight ounces. If cut evenly, they should all have been about five ounces.

Clerk: “This salmon only had nine pieces in it. Do you want another piece?”

Me: “Um… No, thanks.”

Sometimes The Longest Part Of The Trip Doesn’t Happen On The Plane

Airport, Employees, Ignoring & Inattentive, Lazy/Unhelpful, Los Angeles, USA | Working | May 8, 2020

I’m travelling for business and making a connection in Los Angeles International Airport. I’ve just come off a thirteen-hour flight across the Pacific and I’m exhausted. I collect my bag from the carousel and head on through. They have an area where they check baggage for international arrivals making a connection, which is nice.

Employee: “Place your bag on the belt. Can I see your ticket, please?”

I hand my ticket over and lift my bag onto the belt. He works for a moment, then frowns.

Employee: “I’m sorry, but our printer isn’t working so I can’t print a tag for your bag. Since you’ve already paid, I’ll give you a receipt. You need to go to the service desk and they’ll check your bag.”

Me: “No worries. How do I get there from here?”

The directions he gives me seem solid and I follow them to the best of my ability. I arrive at another desk which is completely deserted, and a bored-looking lady is there to see me. I try to explain the situation to her.

Me: “Hi. I tried to check my bag at the international connection area but they couldn’t print my bag tag and told me to come to the service desk to get my bag checked. They gave me this.”

I hold out the receipt. [Employee #2 ] ignores the receipt and looks at my bag.

Employee #2 : “You need to go through security.”

Me: “I… can’t. I have things in there which means this bag needs to be checked, not taken as carry-on. I was directed here to get it checked?”

Employee #2 : *Suddenly* “What have you got in it?”

I don’t understand why she would want to know.

Me: “Makeup, body wash…”

Employee #2 : “They’re going to take it off you.”

We get the attention of another employee who comes over.

Employee #3 : “What does she want?”

Employee #2 : “She wants to take her makeup through security.”

Me: “No. If you’d just liste—”

Employee #3 : “They’re gonna take it off you, honey.”

They’re not listening to me at all, just standing there and repeating over and over that I need to get rid of my stuff. This goes on for a while. I look past the employees to the other side of the room and see body scanners, tubs, and conveyor belts for taking bags through scanners. It looks like security screening is behind this “service desk.”

Me: “I think I’m in the wrong place. Is this the service desk?”

Employee #2 : *Still ignoring me* “You need to throw your makeup out.”

Me: “I’m just going to go back.”

I left. When I found the actual service desk, my issue is resolved quickly. I get that I was in the wrong place, but all they needed to say was, “This isn’t the service desk,” or, “We can’t do that here,” and I might have realised a lot sooner and saved us all twenty minutes.

Now, That’s Just Trashy

Employees, Money, North Carolina, Office, USA | Working | May 7, 2020

I have a coworker that is always looking for a side hustle to make extra cash. She is in several multi-level marketing programs. We drink a lot of sodas and bottled water in the office. While the city has a recycling program, it only collects once a month. To avoid the cans and bottles piling up in our small office, I take them to an automated recycling center that is on the way home when we fill up our bin.

Coworker: “Hey, [My Name]. Where do you take the recycling?”

Me: “Oh, it’s a place on [Road] near my house.”

Coworker: “Do they pay you for it? I heard some of those places pay.”

Me: *Shrugging* “A little. Just a handful of change, usually.”

Coworker: “How much do you get?”

Me: “I don’t know. I never counted it up.”

Coworker: “But how much do you get paid for our recycling?!”

Me: “I really don’t know. A quarter, maybe.”

We went around like this for a bit before she dropped the subject. From that day on, she brought large trash bags to the office and emptied the bin into them at the end of each day. She’d also run up and down the street during her lunch to fish recyclables out of the city trash cans.

Then, she’d take her hoard to the center to get her hard-earned pocket change… after spending $10 on trash bags and driving twenty minutes out of her way to drop them off.

Taking Some Tips From A Certain President

Bad Behavior, Bosses & Owners, Job Interview, Office, USA | Working | May 7, 2020

I’ve applied for and am waiting to interview for a receptionist job at an office. I have experience and the interview is supposed to be at three. I’m right on time and the receptionist asks me to take a seat.

Okay, maybe the interviewer is busy.

I wait and wait. Thirty minutes go by and I’m trying to figure out how to leave. Just then, the interviewer is finally ready and apologizes for the wait. He’s a middle-aged guy with a crazed look in his eyes. We go to his office and sit.

Interviewer: *Fast* “I’m the new manager here. I just got transferred from [Nearby City] and there was a whole bunch of staff here. I fired them all! So, now I’m looking for new staff.”

Me: *Blinks* “Okay.”

Interviewer: “Yeah, they were all horrible, dreadful people and needed to be fired instantly! But I do need new people. So, you’ve worked in an office before?”

The interview went normally after that, but all the while, I kept picturing him pointing at me and saying, “You’re FIRED!” I’m sure he had his reasons for firing them, but I definitely do not want to work for someone who is so keen on taking people’s livelihoods. I went home and told my friends and family and they agreed. What do you think?

Sometimes You Have To Hold Their Hands

Bosses & Owners, Extra Stupid, Office, Salt Lake City, USA, Utah | Working | May 7, 2020

I am working as an IT specialist for a pharmaceutical billing company. One day, our Internet goes down and I am tasked with informing the department managers.

Me: “The Internet is down. We are working with the Internet provider to get it back up.”

Manager #1 : “Okay. Oh! While you’re here, can you see why my email isn’t working?”

Me: “Could you provide more details?”

Manager #1 : “Just before you came to my department, my email was not able to be delivered.”

Me: “…?!!”

Manager #2 : “Hey, [Manager #1 ], state your problem again, but this time, say it slower.”

Manager #1 : “My email isn’t sending to people outside the company… because… I need Internet to send emails.”

Me: “Bingo!”

The two managers and I had quite the laugh about that one

Extend Your Information And They Might Connect You

Call Center, Chicago, Employees, Illinois, Phone Scam, USA | Working | May 7, 2020

The company I work for is owned by one family, and several members of the family work in various positions around the company. The call center fields a lot of calls from solicitors trying to get a hold of various family members to schmooze or sell products, etc. We’re told if callers can provide a full name and/or extension just to put them through, no matter how “spammy” it sounds. That’s a very generously low bar, I think, for solicitors, but apparently still too high for some.

Solicitor: “Hi, I was looking for Mr. [Family Name].”

Me: “Do you have a first name or an extension?”

Solicitor: “No, but I was just talking to him. Mr. [Family Name]. Can you put me through?”

Me: “I understand that you’re trying to reach Mr. [Family Name], but there are several Mr. [Family Name]’s in my directory, and I need to know which one I should transfer you to, or if you have an extension.”

Solicitor: “I don’t have that information.”

Me: “I’m sorry, but I can’t transfer you without a full name or extension.”

Solicitor: “You don’t seem to understand. We were talking about a big-time contract for [something our company doesn’t even do], and we got cut off. Put me through to Mr. [Family Name]. You know, the guy who owns your company. We were just talking. I don’t know what else I can provide you.”

Me: “As I said, you can provide me with a full name or extension. Since you were just talking to Mr. [Family Name], I’m sure at some point you’ll be able to remember his first name.” *Click*

He Gets A Prize For Being Jerk Of The Week

California, Employees, Gas Station, Jerk, USA | Working | May 6, 2020

I manage a gas station. I have been lucky to have a great graveyard guy who is one of my prized employees. One night, my phone rings at home.

Prized Employee: “Hi, [My Name], I wanted to let you know that I need to quit. I’m really sorry.”

Me: “Oh, I’m so sorry to hear that. You’ve been one of my best employees. When is going to be your last day?”

Prized Employee: “Oh, I’m quitting as of now. I won’t be working anymore.”

I look at the clock. It’s almost 9:00 pm; he is supposed to work in a bit over an hour.

Me: “Today? Like in an hour? You couldn’t give me more notice?”

Prized Employee: “Sorry, but my partner and I decided to go off on a mission.”

Me: “Okay, I guess. Good luck.”

I had to scramble to find a replacement for him. About two weeks later, I got a notice that he filed for unemployment with the state. He indicated on the form that I had fired him for no reason. I guess my prized employee wasn’t so prized, was he?

We Have A Hutch That This Company Has A Messy Desk

Employees, Furniture Store, Lazy/Unhelpful, Non-Dialogue, Ohio, USA | Working | May 6, 2020

I am about to turn thirteen. My mother wants to get a desk from a popular shipping site for me, so she goes on a popular company’s store website and orders the desk, complete with a hutch.

Desk #1 looks nothing like the one we ordered, so we call the company and they offer to send us a new one, just like the one we ordered, for free.

We have high hopes for desk #2 , but when it arrives it is dinged up and things are off-center, so we take pictures of the damage, and the company again offers to send a new one at a reduced price. I joke to my mother and tell her that if it keeps going like this, we’ll have a free desk.

Lo and behold, desk #3 is damaged, and the hutch is even worse off. The company apologizes profusely, and my mother, being a patient person, tells them that if the next one is damaged, we will be taking our business elsewhere. The company offers to have somebody inspect it personally moments before it is packaged, to which we agree.

Five days after my thirteenth birthday, the desk arrives, and in no condition to be used. The workers that brought our desk upstairs — also provided as compensation by the company — even say we should ask for a refund.

My mother gives up. We’ve never ordered from that company again.

Lord, Deliver Us From Bad Management

Bad Behavior, Bosses & Owners, Delivery, New Hires, Ohio, USA | Working | May 6, 2020

My cousin recently got a job as a delivery driver for a local florist. He has done a few similar jobs in the past and is taking it mainly to make ends meet while taking night classes to hopefully become an electrician. He signs all the paperwork, is welcomed aboard, and starts his first shift. However, when he is loading up the first delivery, he has this interaction.

Manager: “Oh, make sure to clock out before you go.”

Cousin: “Huh? But I just started my shift.”

Manager: *Rolls her eyes* “Yes, but we don’t pay for your commute.”

Cousin: *Dumbfounded* “I’m… not commuting. I’m driving for deliveries.”

Manager: “Yes, but we aren’t going to pay you when you aren’t working.”

Cousin: “The whole point of my job is to drive around, and you are saying you aren’t going to pay me for doing it!”

The manager just kind of scurries away and locks herself in the office, leaving my cousin with a half-loaded delivery van. Given that his delivery is going to a funeral, he decides to just drive the delivery and deal with that whole mess when he gets back. He drops it off, processes the payment like he was shown, and comes back to the shop to find the owner waiting.

Owner: “I hear you and [Manager] had a disagreement?”

Cousin: “She said that I was supposed to clock out before going out on delivery.”

Owner: “Yes.”

Cousin: *pause* “Then I guess I quit.”

And he promptly dropped off the uniform apron on the front desk and walked out. The owner called him a couple times during the next week to complain about how “unprofessional ” he was being, but he didn’t bother with answering.

He got a couple of other jobs to cover costs, and during the next couple of years, he would chuckle when he saw constantly posted ads for a delivery driver for that company. I think we can guess why they couldn’t retain drive

A Flabbergasting For Everyone

Craft Store, Crazy Requests, Current Events, Minnesota, USA | Working | May 6, 2020

It’s the Monday after many schools have decided to close for an extra week or more due to a recent outbreak of an illness. Minnesota schools will officially close on Wednesday, but parents have the option to keep them out Monday and Tuesday, as well.

Our store hasn’t closed yet, but we’re taking more precautions with health and sanitation, etc, and corporate is keeping an eye on developments across the nation. Our sales run on a cycle, and those cycles really only change around major holidays, like Christmas. I’ve been talking to my coworker about some family news after I’ve rung up a customer, and I’m about to head back to my project.

Customer: “Hi. Weird question. I don’t want to sound like a snot about it, but why aren’t your kids’ craft projects on sale? Schools are being closed and kids are going to be stuck at home. I’m just flabbergasted. I know it’s not your fault, but…”

She continues talking and I keep walking away. Another coworker, who taught for a time and then changed jobs, walks past me.

Coworker #2 : *Laughing* “Flabbergasted? She’s ‘flabbergasted’ ?”

Me: “Yeah, she’s upset that kids’ crafts aren’t on sale with the school closures.”

Coworker #2 : “Oh, my gosh. Really? I didn’t hear that part of the conversation.”

I mentioned it to another coworker — who has children herself — later in the day and we just rolled our eyes. I doubt corporate is going to change an ad just because schools are closing for a health outbreak. Sorry.

I’m glad my coworker handled the conversation, because I might not have been as kind as I should have been about it or might have said something to make her even more annoyed.

Another Employee Who Should Sample The Goods More

Alberta, Calgary, Canada, Coffee Shop, Employees, Ignoring & Inattentive | Working | May 6, 2020

I know this store offers plain cold brew and vanilla bean cold brew, but the vanilla bean drink comes with milk. I love cold brew coffee and vanilla, but on this particular day, I don’t feel like drinking something milky.

Me: “Could I actually just get a regular black cold brew, but then add a shot of vanilla to it?”

Employee: “So, a vanilla cold brew?”

Me: “No, I want black cold brew, but I just want a shot of vanilla syrup added to it.”

Employee: “Oh, sure.”

I pay and a few minutes later a drink comes up for my name, but it is a light tan colour because it has milk in it.

Me: “Is this mine?”

Employee: “Yes.”

Me: “But… I ordered a black cold brew with a shot of vanilla in it.”

Employee: “Yeah, that’s what that is.”

Me: “But it has milk in it.”

Employee: “Yeah, that’s the vanilla bean cold brew.”

Me: “No, I know, but I wanted a black cold brew.”

I just get a confused look from the employee.

Me: “Don’t you guys just have plain vanilla syrup you could add to drinks?”

Employee: “Oh, yeah, I guess I could remake it.”

I understand that these employees just get stuck on autopilot sometimes, but I had hoped asking with a longer description rather than “vanilla cold brew” would snap them out of it. I guess not
